Effect of Ginkgoflavonglycosides in Patients with Recurrent Spontaneous Abortion

Abstract
The proposed mechanism for unknown or immunologic recurrent spontaneous abortion is vessel thrombosis, especially within placental vessels. From this point of view, anti-thrombotic treatments, such as heparin, aspirin (ASA), prednisone have been
used
for treatment. Extracts from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba (Ginkgoflavonglycoside: GFG; Ginexin-F, Sunkyung Pharm. LTD., Korea) have been suggested to be useful in the treatment of various symptoms from impaired peripheral blood flow.
To elucidate the preconceptional effect of GFG in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion, GFG (80 mg, bid) was used in 65 patients for 4-8 weeks before pregnancy.
The pregnancy outcomes could be compared in 41 patients, and these patients were divided into two subgroups; Group ¥°(preconceptional GFG only, N=20) and Group ¥±(preconceptional GFG+postconceptional ASA, N=21). @ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The success rate (gestational weeks>27) of Group ¥° and Group ¥± were 75% (15/20) and 76.2% (16/21), respectively. Overall success rate was 75.6% (31/41).
2. The incidence of prematurity was significantly higher in Group ¥°(40%; 6/15) than that of Group ¥±(6.2%; 1/16) (p=0.025).
3. The increment of serum ¥â-hCG after 48-hours was significant higher in Group ¥± (139.48% vs 71.22%) (p=0.025).
4. Among Group ¥±, serum progesterone and lipid peroxides levels were evaluated in five patients. The serum progesterone levels was higher in the success group when comparing with the failure group. The weekly change of serum lipid peroxides
showed
decreasing trend among the success group.
Although the incidence of prematurity was higher in Group ¥°, the use of GFG before pregnancy could be encouraged as a prophylactic or treatment modalities in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion. At this time, the authors suggest
combination
use with other medications, the adjunctive use of GFG, rather than single use of GFG.
